In the opening act, the audience gets a brief explanation that the colony was founded by the "Genesis Program," led by visionary Nathaniel Shepherd (Gary Oldman), in partnership with NASA. To its credit, the movie does ask some very important questions about the ethical dilemma of raising children on Mars, but unfortunately fails to provide any satisfactory answers.īritish actor Asa Butterfield plays a 16-year-old Gardner Elliot whose mother was an astronaut who found out she was pregnant halfway through her 9-month journey to start a colony on Mars. But in its attempt to combine a family-friendly teen drama with the excitement of space and planetary exploration, The Space Between Us sacrifices scientific integrity in order to focus on a romance between two orphaned teenagers from different worlds. I see you.Riding on the coat-tails of the recent successful space-based thrillers such as Interstellar, The Martian, and Passengers, The Space Between Us seeks to bring the space-movie genre to the teen-romance audience. He brought it in spite of the material, and he deserves an award for it.Īlso - in the first scene at the press conference, one of the extras stares directly into the camera for several seconds. I will say this, though - each of those actors acted their little hearts out. There were major plot holes and story points that didn't make sense - Gardner's heart was enlarged but he could chase a speeding plane down a runway? And what was with the dude at the diner that took their picture and made them pay him for telling them there was free wifi? And where'd all their money come from? And why was Tulsa on this rocket - what was her purpose there? And how did they get to a rocket so conveniently and quickly? And why wasn't there anything resembling modern technology, cars, whatever if this is a several decades in the future? C'mon, man.I can't remember specific examples because I've wiped them from my memory, but every line sounded like The teenagers didn't speak like humans - every conversation between Gardner and Tulsa on their trip made me cringe. The humans didn't act like humans and their characters weren't consistent - the way Gardner goes to Tulsa's classroom was so strange, and him getting up to drink water from the fountain for no reason was just bizarre, and him putting his hand on her BARE LEG out of the blue like that? And her just all of sudden being OK with it?
